This is what the residents of Tres Piedras answer when asked why they think that Tres Piedras should have a community center and what it would mean to them and their families:

'

'

A Community Meeting Place, disaster center, education.

- Stephanie Noland

When there was a place for the community to gather, it was a very popular place for residents of ALL ages to play volleyball.  I don't live in TP full time but would like very much to see a meeting place again.  Your other plans with broadband and other activities would be welcome by many, including me, I am sure.

- Dottie Brylinski

i think tres piedras could really use a place for youth to gather in a healthy, safe environment.  giving them access to resources the rest of society takes for granted, like the internet, will help put them on equal footing with the rest of the country.

really, just offering activities other than sex, alcohol, guns and drugs would be a community gift to the kids.  this may not be comfortable to read, but it's honest.

on a personal (read: selfish) level, it would be nice to not have to travel to taos for internet access at the library.

A place to meet and share our common purpose(s)

- Kirk Rose

The addition/inclusion of a community center would be a start in uniting the community of Tres Piedras.  An Emergency command center which could become available should such services become necessary.

-Conrad Cordova

How about a bigger porch + picnic tables, maybe a greenhouse for winter sun. Wi-Fi! Cell phone reception + public pay phone, fenced yard for dogs, playground for kids.

- Terry Lattimore

Something cool for the community.

-Alan Roberts

What it would mean to us would depend on what kind of facilities or services were offered at the community center. It would be useful to my household if we could join a food co-op.

The location would probably determine the success of a community center in TP.

Some computers on broadband abailable free to the community would probably be used.  Good coffee available might be very popular too. A community bulletin board would be essential.

A greenhouse could provide some operating funds and provide a service, thru renting greenhouse space, or by raising and selling greens etc early and late in the year, but it would take some committed people.

- Miguel Kyote

I think that it is so valuable to have a secular place to meet with neighbors that is also not commercial. I would like to have a place to teach people my recycling crafts.

- Sheila Shortell

I would like a community center to improve the quality of life for all the residents in the Tres Piedras area through awareness and education.  If our community, particularly our younger generations, is going to be successful in a technology driven world, they will need a foundation of computer skills.  I believe this center will provide them with this foundation.  As well as a focal point for the community to share ideas and organize our efforts.

- George Allalunis

It would be a place to get together socially to know our neighbors and build community.

- Diane Kowalski

A place where people in the community might come together to get to know one another.  As parents it is a desire to know other parents and the opportunity for our pre-school age daughter to socialize.

- John and Jeanny Krizan

Besides the obvious sense of community unity; a community center would be able to provide local information concerning forestry issues, county and state issues and basically 'what's happening in the TP area'. Other facilities hopefully would include recreation and perhaps even a limited basic health service.

- Bob and Lee Widgren

My family is very excited about the progress being made in TP. My family owns land in TP and we are now excited about building out there. We would love to see a community center.
I have an eight and thirteen year old.

- Dionne Bilal

It would be nice to have a workshop for computer illiterates.

- John Brown

Being a musician, it would mean easier access to music tabs. Internet connect in Tres Piedras make networking simpler.

The garden sounds great for our community, & I would love to be involve in that department.

- Troy Whitford

I could teach and perhaps create a work force for my small needlework business.

I could have exposure of my art via the newsletter.

It would ease the isolation and create some healthy bonding, which is an important move for everyone.

- Dayan Cameron

Tres Piedras is a highly sparse community. There are not many ways or reasons as to meeting other people around the area, or things to do. There is no gas station, restaurant, grocery, frizby golf course, community green house, etc. there is very little reason to want to start any of these things back up as well when there is not much promises of a good turnout of people. A community center is just that, the central meeting point for a community of people to meet and congregate. Its a place that can be used for computer use, book exchange, free box, community meetings, and a place where people can implement life enhancing ideas. A community garden. Workshops on permaculture and water conservation. The building itself could be passive solar and running on renewable energy. In my opinion, a community center could help breath the life back into Tres Piedras, and would give a reason to grow and flourish.

- Cameron Atkins

Internet access, knowledge of community activities, resources, contact w/ my neighbors as well as family, & a potential outlet for my own work.

- Hudson H. Brace

A thriving community needs a center of commerce and sociability... a gathering place. TP has been forced to use the fire station for all such as: voting, funerals, dances, weddings, etc. A community center is necessary.

-Deborah Graves

It would be a central meeting point, where neighbors could meet and discuss- very much how Cozarts used to serve but without the booze (fortunately). Otherwise you just wave at people as you pass on the highway. I would encourage it be used for a local farmers market too. Locally grown food is the future, as well as a platform to explore alternative energy and who needs help building their house. Also contact the vet clinics and tell them what you are doing- they may be willing to run a spay and neuter clinic for a day to help the unwanted  and economically compromised pet owners.

- Jane Gerard

This town needs a place for people to get together besides the Fire Station, which for some reason seems to be available only to the select few.

It will be a good place to network with others and exchange information and education.

- Merce Mitchell

I envision a community center initially as a place where people of the community can come together.  A place to begin to develop relationships.  I have gotten to know some of the people in the community in the past seven years and believe there are many talented & interesting people. I have heard stories of others and have read some of the history. As an historic community Tres Piedras is rich and diverse. Yet having access to this collective knowledge and talents is limited due to a lack of meeting place.  As a teacher and child advocate I believe it is essential for a larger community to be involved in a child's life, especially in this area where people are such strong individualists. Children need the influence and examples that a diverse community can provide.  Ultimately, I would like to see a community center become the heart of our small town.  I would like to see the different residents sharing their knowledge by offering classes, services or talents through a central place.

- Andrea Kyte

About Food co-op & community greenhouse: It would mean a lot to me & the community, better food & nutrition for all. Lots of people out here do without because lack of transportation or gas, also possibly neighbors working together more because of mutual needs.

- Pennie Carter

Economic restraints have polarized and burdened our once viable and interactive community.  It would be beautiful to see the spirit of community reincarnate again, led by an intelligent, respectful leadership.  Our present and future generations would greatly benefit from this thoughtful and enthusiastic effort and bond community members once again.  I whole heartedly support this endeavor and would be willing to donate physical and financial support.  Bravo for the work done so far.  Tres Piedrans and vicinity people really need a center like the one proposed.  It would be great to see it come to fruition.

- Pattie Allalunis

As a mother of two young children, one of whom suffers from developmental delays, I am dismayed and disappointed by the lack of community-oriented projects and activities available in Tres Piedras and the surrounding areas today.  A community center would mean so much to the people of Northern New Mexico in so many ways.  It would help my children gain access to educational opportunities that they will otherwise never receive.  It will help other young parents like me find support and comfort by providing a common meeting ground for all residents of Tres Piedras.  It will open innumerable financial opportunities for the community of Tres Piedras by creating new jobs, attracting a higher quality work force to the community, and by revitalizing a town crippled by poverty and lack of motivation for improvement.  In short, a community center in Tres Piedras will change the town forever.  It will help transform Tres Piedras from a dismally small spot on the map into a bright star to which other economically stunted communities can look to for support and inspiration.

- Amanda Allalunis

A community center would mean to me - a place for meeting neighbors, educational and recreational opportunities, for moral and spiritual support, and as an alternative place to get away to when "cabin fever" settles in during the winter months, for those who prefer not to commute to Taos or another town to do so.

- Eve Ribas

It would provide a place where community members could meet.  As it stands, there is no central meeting place in Tres Piedras.  Residents sometimes do not see one another for years on end.  This lack of a center leads to disunity and the inability of the community to function as an entity. This situation has been causing residents to move away to places where there is more social interaction and opportunity for involvement.

- Sandra Russell

A place to meet people of TP and get to know them better.  Place to use computers if needed.  Even though I have an extensive library - most do not and where reading is concerned - there is only the good.

- Brenda Iovino

A community center is a hub where people can be supported in social/emotional ways. A community can actually become more cohesive, active and expansive if a central location becomes specified where community members can work and play together.

- Kathi L'Belle

I have been waiting for something to happen in Tres Piedras forever. I think that community center would be great here because everyone can't wait to get out of T.P., but if there is something fun here maybe more people will come to town and the people that live here will enjoy living here.

- Cora Kuykendall

A meeting place where people can learn and grow and further build the community.

- Daryl and Fred Black

Tres Piedras needs a place where people can meet on common ground without having to go to someone's house. We need a place where we can take fun classes, have meetings, use computers, have some good coffee together, maybe community garden, greenhouse, loom, kiln. I would also love to see Tres Piedras Community Center set a new standard by utilizing only renewable energy technologies for our energy needs!

- Mona Makela
